The setup
Mona and her stepbrother are headed for a summer with a British host family that is, she warns him, extremely proper. Her idea of preparing him is to stumble into his lap, notice the effect, and tease him about greeting their hosts in that condition. The family has two sons their age, which Mona finds very promising. At the house she wanders off toward something that would feel nice right now, and their host Charlotte appears so smoothly that he loses the plot. The episode closes on a welcome from Charlotte so forward it seems too good to be true.
Episode 2
Episode 2 pops the bubble at once: Mona snaps him out of a daydream, and Charlotte turns out to be a gracious host who sleeps next door. Mona then snoops through one of the sons' bedrooms, finds an excuse to make her stepbrother squirm, and offers a private demonstration before tea. He sends her away; she tells him to text her. A stopped clock, an unexpected greeting and a shocked gasp close the episode.
Who's who
- Mona: the stepsister, shameless, competitive, and openly jealous of the English hostess
- The stepbrother: the one trying to behave, which mostly means saying her name in alarm
- Charlotte: the polished host whose welcome he imagines going much further
Viewers who enjoy crude, fast teasing and a stepsister who treats every room in a stranger's house as her playground.
You dislike fake-out dreams or brash dialogue, since this one swaps subtlety for shock lines and a lot of oops.
Verdict: 6.9 out of 10
The culture-clash idea is solid, a loud visiting stepsister loose in a buttoned-up English home, but the script spends it on shock lines. Mona has energy to spare, and her jealousy of Charlotte gives her a motive. The stepbrother mostly protests. Ending episode 1 on a daydream and resetting it seconds later feels cheap, though episode 2 recovers with a decent ticking clock before tea. If you like brazen over clever, it delivers; anyone hoping for a comedy of English manners will be disappointed.
