The setup

Jake's voiceover confesses the ending up front: he got engaged, then he met the mother. The rest of Episode 1 is how. Sophie brings him home to show off the ring, her father is held up somewhere as always, and Veronica Parker greets him with a once-over and a mention of rumors about late nights. Dinner, a toast to seven days of nothing, and then Sophie heads to bed. Veronica claims a dance with her daughter's fiance, tells him to breathe, and assures him she is harmless, at least on night one.

Episode 2

Jake stammers his way out of the dance and back to Sophie. Come morning, work drags her into town and he is left in the house with Veronica, who needs help with a stretch and claims nobody else can give it. She compliments his technique; he manages one comeback about everything he has never tried. Then she announces a shower, offers company, and calls him in by name when he lingers outside the door.

Veronica is the reason to watch. She runs every scene with the patience of someone who knows how it ends, and her teasing has the wink this material needs. Jake is a set of nervous syllables, which tilts the balance toward her but stays plausible. Both free episodes follow a classic escalation: dance, alone time, a shower invitation. Nothing surprises, yet the pacing is confident. If this pairing is your thing, the paid rest looks like a safe bet.
