The setup
Ava, Paul's stepdaughter, shares a house with him and her mother, and she gets home late from a party to find Paul waiting with questions about the man who drove her. That man, she says, got nowhere; her interest lies closer to home. Rather than slip away, she lures Paul into the kitchen for a late snack. Asked to keep this from Mom, he wonders aloud what his silence is worth. Then Mom calls his name, he invents a sudden thirst, and Ava, now in his debt, repays him with a fresh request: a lift to tomorrow's party.
Episode 2
Paul plays chauffeur, Ava plays quick-change artist. Her sensible outfit was strictly for Mom's benefit, she explains, once his eyes drift off the windshield. She has him pull over, recruits him to undo a knot and catches him breaking her no-looking rule. He stammers something about her mother; Ava finishes the sentence: Mom is not in the car. The party was never the destination. She wants somewhere private, and she has something to show him.
Who's who
- Ava: Paul's stepdaughter, a woman with a busy social life and a gift for leverage
- Paul: her stepdad, married to her mother and terrible at keeping his eyes where they belong
- Mom: Paul's wife, heard calling his name once, and the reason everyone keeps whispering
Anyone who likes stepfamily taboo played as a quiet heist, with a kitchen near miss, a getaway car and an accomplice who keeps peeking.
You need Paul to have a spine: he bargains exactly once, then spends the car ride apologizing.
Verdict: 5.8 out of 10
The premise is secondhand, but the staging is tidy. Episode 1 earns its tension honestly: a whispered bargain, a voice calling from elsewhere in the house, and a glass-of-water alibi Paul delivers like a hostage statement. Episode 2 is thinner, one roadside costume change stretched to fill the minute, though the decoy outfit is a neat touch. Its exit line about a secret destination could close any series. Ava carries it; Paul mostly sweats. The rest tempts only if you care where that car ends up.
