The setup
At a family reunion on a ranch, he walks in on Leah, his newly acquired step-cousin, and apologizes. She does not. Her mother has been calling him cute and quiet, and Leah sets out to test both claims, reminding him often that their connection is only semi-official. Her boyfriend is no obstacle; he is busy falling for a horse. Dinner runs short of chairs, the parents beam at how well the newcomers are bonding, and he is told to show Leah the ranch on horseback. She accepts with the obvious pun, straight-faced.
Episode 2
The boyfriend finally notices Leah is missing and starts calling for her, which only makes her bolder. She dismisses him as a man who could misplace his own head, reminds her step-cousin that they are just relatives catching up, and announces that silence is now required. Then the boyfriend's voice comes from very close by. Leah's answer to the danger is to warn her quiet companion that she will make staying silent difficult, then dare him to manage it.
Who's who
- Leah: the new step-cousin, cheerfully redrawing the family tree to suit her plans
- The quiet cousin: exactly as advertised, and outmatched by Leah from the first scene
- The boyfriend: devoted to the horses and always about twenty feet from the truth
Viewers who like a forward heroine, a clueless boyfriend within earshot and taboo played for winks rather than angst.
You want a two-way conversation: the quiet cousin lives up to his billing and Leah does nearly all the talking.
Verdict: 5.9 out of 10
Leah carries this one on charm and a running gag about genealogy. Her constant correction of how related they really are works the first two times, and the boyfriend who prefers horses is the best throwaway joke in either episode. The weak spot is the other half of the pairing, who exists mainly to be teased. The free episodes move from introduction to hiding place efficiently, and a boyfriend calling from close range is a reliable cliffhanger, if not a fresh one.
