The setup
Jake owes his new position to his girlfriend, who talked her stepmother, Margot Vey, into hiring him. Margot runs the room and makes sure everyone feels it. In his first meeting a colleague pitches rosy quarterly numbers, Jake points out a slide is wrong, and Margot clears the room. Apparently honesty is her weakness. She suggests he stay late. His girlfriend texts that she is minutes away, which ends the moment but not the offer: Margot schedules him for nine o'clock, in her office.
Episode 2
Episode 2 is the late shift, and Jake has told his girlfriend he is working, which Margot treats as an opening line. He tries to draw a family boundary; she notes that he showed up anyway. Mid-session, the girlfriend calls to ask whether Jake is behaving or already the favorite, and Margot praises his dedication in a perfectly level voice. The call ends, the leash tightens, and the episode stops on a reminder of who got him hired.
Who's who
- Jake: new hire, loyal boyfriend in theory, and the one employee willing to contradict the boss
- Margot Vey: the stepmother who runs the company floor like a tribunal and rewards candor after hours
- The girlfriend: proud of landing him the job and completely blind to what it costs
Viewers who like boss-and-employee power games with a family twist, and who enjoy a phone call ringing at exactly the wrong moment.
You want the girlfriend to matter: she exists mainly as a voice on the phone and a ticking clock.
Verdict: 6.7 out of 10
Workplace dominance plus step-family taboo is a crowded lane, but this entry is clean and well paced. Margot is a convincing boss, which makes her interest in the one employee who corrects her feel earned rather than random. The girlfriend's call in episode 2 is the best scene: two conversations at once, and Jake losing both. Nothing here is surprising, yet it does the expected thing with confidence. The overtime is worth clocking in for.
