The Groom's Personal Trainer review

The setup

Five days before his wedding, the groom walks into a private studio, and his trainer's welcome is warm enough that his first thought is a plea to his own body. She shrugs it off as a hazard of the profession and congratulates his fiancée on her luck. The fiancée then interrupts with a crisis: a chaotic venue, with his mother and the caterer at war. He promises a phone call. The trainer declares the easy part finished, wants him shirtless for the sake of form, questions whether he is ready to marry, and books him for tomorrow, alone.

Who's who

• The groom: days from the altar, juggling wedding chaos and far too polite to refuse instructions
• The trainer: a private-studio professional with flexible ethics and firm opinions about his readiness to marry
• The fiancée: the bride-to-be, buried in venue trouble and handing him the caterer problem

Verdict: 6.9 out of 10

Competent, and not much more. A wedding a few days off is a decent frame, and the fiancée's catering emergency is the right kind of interruption, landing just as the trainer finds her rhythm. Her patter is confident and practiced, as if she has run this routine on other grooms (which may be the point). He never pushes back hard enough to make her work for it, though. The episode closes on an appointment rather than a jolt, so the pull toward the paid episodes is gentle.
