The setup
Alma is hauling supplies for her slumber party and guarding the bags like contraband, while her stepbrother Ethan stares and her mom checks that the guests are still due at seven. Alma calls out the staring; Ethan, unrepentant, files it under appreciation. Mom sends him to answer the door, and the first guest appraises him on the spot, then teases Alma for leaving out how attractive he is. Alma's policy is firm on paper: men are banned unless she picks one personally. Within the minute, the ban has its first exception.
Episode 2
No English subtitles for episode 2 yet, so this one rests on the opener.
Who's who
- Alma: the stepsister and hostess, strict about her guest list until she isn't
- Ethan: her stepbrother, drafted as door staff and unapologetic about staring
- The guest at the door: first to arrive, she sizes up Ethan on the doorstep and likes what she sees
Viewers who enjoy a stepsibling rivalry with an audience, where every new arrival makes the house rules shakier.
You want story in the opener: it is a minute of bag-carrying, door-answering and one house rule.
Verdict: 5.4 out of 10
Call it a lobby rather than a party. The opener is all arrival: bags carried in, a mom checking the schedule, a stranger on the doorstep rating the stepbrother. Alma owns the one line with teeth, a house rule that comes with its own loophole, while Ethan's job is to stare and get caught. A house filling up with guests is a promising engine, since every new face is another witness. As a first impression, though, it is slight, and the premise, not the dialogue, is the reason to continue.
