The setup
Riley drags her boyfriend Jack out of bed, debates outfits, and announces that her stepmom Regina, unseen for two years, cannot wait to meet him. Regina arrives full of warmth, takes one look at Jack and congratulates Riley on her choice, with special attention to how strong he looks. Riley notices nothing. She is too busy delivering a breathless monologue about how swamped she has been and how perfect Jack is, down to a two-hour drive for coffee. Then someone suggests dancing, and the episode leaves them there.
Episode 2
Episode 2 starts with the dancing and keeps the dialogue to a minimum. A spilled drink ends up all over Regina, an apology turns into a snarl, and Regina asks Jack to help her clean up, which reduces him to unfinished sentences. Then the pair are discovered together, and the episode closes on someone walking out while another voice demands to know where they are going.
Who's who
- Riley: the girlfriend, chatty, proud of her boyfriend and oblivious to everything in the room
- Jack: the boyfriend, polite, nearly silent and visibly out of his depth
- Regina: Riley's stepmom, effusive with compliments, most of them aimed squarely at Jack
Viewers who like the slow dread of a partner who misses every signal while her stepmom openly sizes up the boyfriend.
You need dialogue to carry a story: long stretches here are silent, and Jack hardly finishes a sentence.
Verdict: 5.3 out of 10
The setup is reasonable, a meet-the-family visit with one family member far too interested, but the execution feels padded. Riley's monologue about her busy life is the longest speech in the two episodes and tells us almost nothing, while Regina, the more interesting character, gets a handful of lines. Episode 2's spill-and-discovery sequence is clumsy enough that the cliffhanger is hard to follow. The paid episodes have a premise to work with, but the free ones do not make a persuasive case.
