The setup
The prince marries Princess Maren tomorrow, and his stepcousin has spent four days in the saddle to arrive before the bride. During the tournament, the prince hits dead center and takes the prize. Tradition says the winner's ribbon belongs to his future wife. He hands it to his stepcousin instead, in full view of the court. She asks whether he understands what he has done, reminds him of a night they shared long ago, and promises to find him at tonight's feast. The bride can keep the table.
Episode 2
The feast opens with the prince pledging himself to Maren for the wedding night, and Maren hinting she may not wait. The stepcousin borrows him and lays out her motive: his father picked Maren last winter, and she came to learn whether the prince remembers the nights they shared under the family roof. A ribbon, she informs him, was never the point. With the toast poured, she pulls him behind a curtain and sets a deadline measured in cups.
Who's who
- The prince: a groom-to-be with a public streak of honesty and terrible timing
- His stepcousin: a woman with a long memory, a fast horse, and no patience for protocol
- Princess Maren: a bride introduced with fanfare and upstaged within a minute
Viewers who like costume-drama taboo, forbidden reunions, and court etiquette broken in public rather than behind closed doors.
You want dialogue with flair; the court-speak here is stiff, and the stepcousin does nearly all the talking.
Verdict: 5.9 out of 10
A single ribbon does more plotting here than most whole episodes manage: one gesture, made in public, that blows up a wedding and revives an old affair at once. Episode 2 fills in the motive, an arranged match and an old flame testing whether he will fight it, and the stepcousin's line about the ribbon versus the man is the best so far. The court-speak stays stiff and the prince stays vague. Costume-drama fans will want to know what happens behind that curtain.
