The setup
Somebody goes under at the pool, and the man coming to is greeted by Sophie, the lifeguard, coaching his breathing and complimenting how well he follows orders. Then she notices his body is responding too. By the following day he turns up as the newest cabana hire and the nephew of the manager's husband. Sophie happily mentions how close she came to giving him CPR, intercepts plans to send him to deck duty, and claims him as her trainee. The manager warns her to stay professional. Sophie promises a summer of lessons.
Episode 2
Episode 2 starts the lessons in private, until a shift change brings Brooklyn, a fellow lifeguard who promises to keep quiet and hints she would like a turn. Sophie tells her to wait. The official curriculum is water safety certification, and Sophie happens to be the one who approves his. A rescue dummy proves useless, so he becomes the practice patient. Her CPR instructions double as innuendo, and the lesson ends with Sophie very pleased with what she finds.
Who's who
- Sophie: the lifeguard, bold, funny and unapologetic about turning safety training into flirtation
- The new hire: fresh off a near drowning, related to management and happy to be rescued twice
- The manager: his aunt by marriage, keen on professionalism and not fooled for a second
Viewers who enjoy a take-charge lifeguard, a poolside setting and innuendo that never pretends to be subtle.
You want both leads talking: the new hire mostly listens while Sophie runs every scene and every double meaning.
Verdict: 6.3 out of 10
A near drowning is a genuinely good meet-cute for this kind of show, and Sophie wastes none of it. Her lines are brash and funny, the manager's warnings add a sliver of risk, and Brooklyn's cameo suggests the club has more than one interested party. The CPR lesson in episode 2 is a single joke stretched long, but the joke is decent. The hero is mostly scenery. If Sophie's energy works for you, the rest of the summer will look appealing.
